Camera Angles Used

The Angle that the Camera is placed during a cut is very important. Professional Camera men will position the camera angles not only in different spots to keep the film running in flow, but also to capture parts of the scene that they want YOU the audience to see.
Throughout are process of filming we tried to take this into account for each situation. We tried to create the best camera angle possible at each point to display our point.

Medium Shot.

This is a Medium Camera Angle. This is effective in this scene as it enables the audience to visualise not only the protagonist actor, but also the artist following him. This shot is more effective then for example a long angle because you can see that the artist is singing in the background, and shows the mise en scene in detail.

Close-Up Shot.

This Close-Up shot is very effective. Close-Ups can show emotion through an individual body part. This Close-Up is of the eye, this is effective and essential for are music video as it shows that "tears wont fall from my eyes," (lyrics) and the emotion comes straight through from the tear.

Over The Shoulder Shot

This over the shoulder shot was used to show that the protagonist is driving. This gives a 3rd person view and gives the suggestion of going back in time as the car moves in reverse.

High Angle Shot.

This is a High Angle Shot, this is effective to show the pieces of plates smash and spread out of the screen, it also shows the plate go back in reverse to its normal unbroken plate. This really brings out the view of going back in time.

Long Shot.
This is a long shot, we used this to show a good amount of the car at different angles as it moved.

Birds eye view shot.

The Birds eye view shot is often used to present a land scape. However we have used it here to look down on the artist, this gives the effect that he is looking up to the sky.

Costume

  • Costume is essential for a music video, the costume must be presentable without having too much attention on the character as this could effect the outcome of understanding the video.
  • The protagonist actor was made to dress up in very plain/casual clothes, this is to create the ordinary scenes, but as it was an urban hip hop video, he has his hood up in a variety of scenes just to capture the essence of the urban nature which the video revolves around.
  • However the character seen as the artist, is dressed up more to look outstanding and 'hiphop' to add a cool hint to the video. This also adds to the film when the protagonist walks straight past the artist almost as if he is a 'ghost' in the video.
  • The female character is presented in a costume, which is just a t-shirt and pants. However the t-shirt is long so nothing is showing because there is no nudity needed in the video as the idea can be conveyed through the use of acting also without nudity the film would not need to be classified under a age rating through the BBFC. If we were to use a professional actress we would use a more outstanding amount of nudity to add a greater sexual content to the video.
  • The Antagonist is also in casual wear as they are not an important part of the video but are necessary to be there to express the view of being cheated on as there must be another character in the video to convey what they the female actress and the antagonist are up to.

Theory behind the video and Applications

As a start to the Media Studies music video, we did lots of research into what makes a good music video. After watching many different things we realised 'some' videos form to the same conventions. After noticing this occasional same objective, we decided to look and see if there was any theories that had to be applied to make a good conventional music video.

Andrew Goodwin applied features that all music videos should have.
Goodwin's features:
  • Links between lyrics and visuals - (our music video follows this convention as when the lyrics "tears won't fall from my eyes" occurs, we show a clip of one of our actors crying, but then reversing the shot so the tears flies back up into the eye to show that he does not want to cry.)
  • Links between music and visuals (our video follows this entirely as we continually cut to the beat, and as the song is of a very urban background, we show our video in an urban location and have various mise en scene approaches to this urban under layer, such as clothing, props, semiotics, gait and even the actual footage)
  • Genre characteristics (as commented in the bullet point above, our genre is largely urban and hip hop, and we follow this genre perfectly as we use many hip hop video conventions such as having the video revolve around an attractive girl)
  • Intertextuality reference (we follow one of the 4 pillars of hip hop - rapping)
  • Notions of looking (we follow this theory as we generally show what is going on with the protagonist and with his mind, enhancing this by showing P.O.V shots and showing a lot of facial expressions. Also, show the smashing of a plate that he throws in slow motion, to indicate how he feels ; Anger, Broken heart.)
  • Voyeurism (direct gaze, other people looking at artist, insight into artist life, screens and mirrors.)
  • Demand of the record label (representation of artist)
  • Performance based, narrative based or concept based music video (We follow a narrative based music video)

Research into Madeon

As we were originally going to do a music video to a dance track, we researched into the artist and more specifically the music video which inspired us the most.

Pop Culture is a song produced by Madeon who is a 17 year old making his way to fame the video for this song is very catchy and different.
The genre is of dance, this comes out of the blue, when a male dancer (protagonist), dressed as a casual/ odd everyday office worker starts to dance in many different places doing the same funky dance, that represents how he is not bothered of what people think of him. This is conventional for a Pop video because it makes you want to dance which a pop video should do. The confidence of the protagonist makes others believe in them selves constantly pushing for a dance this helps achieve the purpose of a pop video.
Throughout the video the camera angle is set on a medium shot, to fit the different backgrounds and the dance moves in. This is effective because you can see the dance clearly and have enough background image to tell the different places. When this becomes tedious it starts, stop motion shots to make the audience still intrigued and make the video slightly different.
The music suits the video because the music is in the genre of dance, seeing this (funky) male dancer do enjoyable and strangely experienced dance moves to target the audience and make them feel like joining in.

Another song he has done recently is this, with his songs it tends to more of a hip-hop sound to it.

The reason we used call sheets is because we thought it would be effective to use as it would keep us on track to finish the filming and also we would know who would be needed on that day of filming, and to also know what role they would be doing.

Filming Diary

December

3rd

  • Started the filming in Tom's house, it is the scenes at the end of the music video when Eliot (the main protagonist) is getting back into bed.
  • Then went to Eliot's house and did the scene where he sets up the dinner table expecting his girlfriend to come round and also were the plates are smashed. We also did another bit of filming when Charlie does the tear drop where we use it to reverse it.
15th

  • Today we mainly focused on doing the rapping, we first started  doing the part in the car, where Eliot is driving and Charlie is in the back rapping to the song. We then moved to various different locations such as in Eliots garden where we filming Charlie rap again, but we decided to do a high angle shot to mix it up, and also to show that we could do different angles. The last two rapping parts where one where Charlie was sitting on the wall rapping and the other one was where he was standing  in front of a wall, we finished all the parts we needed for the rapping.
Janruary

4th

  • Today we did the main bulk of the music video, most of the main parts we had missed out on such as the start where charlie is shown to be walking behind Eliot. We also used today as a time to make any corrections that we thought should be changed. We did a big chunk of the music video today and it was looking very promising to finish our music video ready for editing when we wanted too.

12th

  • Today we started to do the start of the music video, where we use a different piece of music to show a sort of background for the reason why we are doing the music video, where the main protagonist (Eliot Byrne) is going to his Ex-Girlfriends house and sees her with another boy, this part of the video really shows the reason on why we are doing the music video. Today was also the deadline where we wanted to music video to be finished to start editing the video, and we successfully completed it.

Overall we thought it was a good idea to keep a diary, so we could keep on track with what we were doing and what parts we had done, it also kept us on track so we knew when we wanted certain things finished by, it really helped to keep the group on a whole, on track.

Character List (The Group)

Before actually filming we made a list of characters and their names next to it so we could quickly call them if they were needed for filming. We thought it was a good idea to keep a backup actor just incase one of our members were ill and were unable to do the filming if we needed them. Thankfully, the backup actor wasn't needed but we were still glad we had one ready for any unexpected things that could have occurred.

  • Main protagonist - Eliot Byrne
  • Vocalist - Charlie Dennis
  • Antagonist - Tom Bramley
  • Girl Actor - Georgia Ashton
  • Backup Actor - Nick Sheldon

Props

For our video we decided to do a props list so we could make a checklist for the time when we decided to do the filming so we didn't miss out on any props and waste valuable filming time.

  • Digital flip camera
  • Tripod
  • Music CD (to remind us of lyrics and stages)
  • Costumes
  • Computer
  • Lighting
  • Plates (to smash)
  • Cutlery
  • Wine Glasses/bottle
  • Car
  • Mobile Phone

Initial Planning

For our final piece, we have decided to do a music video. We have faced many difficulties while trying to find the perfect song to do a video to. Our first idea was a song called R.E.S.P.E.C.T by Aretha Franklin, it was also a remix, the remix was faster paced than the original song. The genre of this Dance/Electro Beat.

With this song we found it hard to get ideas, because the song was so such a fast tempo, we collected a few ideas for this song but we thought against them as we didn't think it would look 100% professional. Although it would be possible with a lot of hard work, we decided against it as we wanted a song that would portray a message to the audience, and as this was a remix with a lot of the meaningful song lyrics taken out, it would be difficult to follow Goodwins theory of linking the lyrics and the visuals together.

The next song we decided to try and have a go at was by Labrinth  ft. Tinie Tempah called Earthquake:

The problem was the same again for this music video, we struggled to collect ideas for the video, we got some ideas and they were looking promising. As we thought this was going to be the song we were going to do we made a questionnaire to ask a class of students what they thought about the video and how it made them feel:
The only problem we faced to do this song was the location we wanted, we wanted to get a gym room with a punching bag in it, as we were unable to get one for the time we wanted we had to change our idea. Also, this video already had an extremely professional music video already produced, so we were  a bit hesitant as we wanted a sort of a fresh sheet to create out video.

The final song we chose and have managed to start recording is a song called Tears by Tinie Tempah Ft. Cleo Sol. Produced by DaVinChe.

With this song we got many of ideas and started filming immediately, with our music video there is a storyline to it. We thought to put a storyline into the video so there is a meaning to it, and we have also made sure the message is clear of what we are trying to portray.

Research of Magazine Advertisements

This is a magazine advertisement for a Drake song. Personally I think this advert is extremely effective and this advert in specific is where we got a lot of our inspiration from. It tells you everything you need to know about the song release, with an effective picture of the artists featuring in the song. The most important information is in bold, which brings attention to it straight away. There is no additional information drawing the audiences attention away, nor is there any other subliminal advertising methods used, it is purely just to inform people that the song is now available on iTunes, which is exactly what it needs to do and it is exactly what it has done. I believe that our magazine advertisement also follows this brief, and similar to this one, it tells you exactly what you need to know without any beating around the bush.
This is a magazine advertisement for one of Mika's album. I personally do not think that this is a good advert. The name of the artist stands out perfectly which many bright colours and wacky images, which would definitely draw the viewers attention. However, as this is an advert to promote the release of the album, it would be extremely more effective if the album date release and the information about it would be in bigger letters so that it would be instantaneously seen by any viewer.

Finally, this is another example of a very good magazine advert. The picture on the left titles the artists name in letters that stand out, and is not too cluttered with basic colours which still catch the viewers eye with the effective use of the 3 bars of red. Furthermore, the name of the album/song is in very bold letters and the date is even larger, which is doing exactly what the advert needs to do: promote the song release. This would be an effective advert to compare unto ours as our advert follows the same principles and conventions as this certain one.

Some Of Our Previous Tasks Undertaken

This was one of the very first tasks we undertook to get ourselves acquainted to the iMovie editing software and basic camera equipment, just as a bit of fun really. We shot this video and almost turned it into a sort of a quirky music video, so this was very helpful in helping us understand and create our final music video.

This was one of the bigger project we created, albeit slightly different than our music video genre, as this was of the thriller genre. Be that as it may, it was definitely beneficial to our production of our music video as we used a much larger area to film in with a music wider variety of camera angles and required a much larger contextual study and research of the genre, which gave us a definitive indication of what was needed in our final music video. We had to undergo the same sort of though process with this film that was required in our music video, for instance we had to go through rigorous market research to see what was needed and what the conventions were for a good thriller.

Email to the management of Tinie Tempah

Just as an idea, we thought that it may be worthwhile to email the management of Tinie Tempah in the hope that they would take the time out to read our email and watch our video and give any sort of feedback available
